These 10 District 10 girls basketball standouts make Pa. Sports Writers all-state team

Cathedral Prep and Kennedy Catholic put together deep runs this year in girls basketball as both teams ended their seasons in Hershey.

As a result of their success, both teams had three players named to the Pennsylvania Sports Writers Girls Basketball all-state team on Friday.

Jayden McBride, Addie Biel and Lena Walz of Cathedral Prep made the Class 5A team, Layke Fields, Bella Magestro and Monique Vincent of Kennedy Catholic made the Class 2A team. District 10 also had four other selections, including Mercyhurst Prep senior Olivia Kulyk, Northwestern's Makayla Presser-Palmer and Wilmington's Lia Krarup on the Class 3A team and West Middesex's Caitlin Stephens on the Class 2A team.

Prep made its second run to Hershey in four years as McBride and Walz were a part of both runs. McBride, a Georgetown commit, averaged 13.6 points per game and finished with more than 1,000 career points, while Biel, a junior, scored 15.6 points per game to be named to the first team.

“It’s a huge accomplishment. I am happy and blessed to be named first-team all-state. My name might be on the list, but I wouldn't have these accomplishments without my teammates and my coaches pushing me to be the best basketball player I can be,” McBride said. “I give it all to my teammates. They're getting me the open shots, they're setting screens, and they are making reads. My teammates are the reason I'm getting open shots. I'm just happy I was able to play with such an amazing group.”

“I am beyond grateful to be named first-team all-state, but I couldn't have accomplished this without my coaches and teammates,” Biel said. “We all push each other each day to be great, and I am proud of each and every one of my teammates and the hard work and dedication they have put into this team.”

McBride also made the first team last winter, while Walz was a third-team pick as a junior. Walz, a St. Bonaventure recruit, was named to the second team on Friday after scoring 11.4 points per game this season.

“It’s a great honor and achievement to be named second-team all-state. I feel very blessed and grateful to have been part of such a great team here at Prep and I couldn’t have accomplished this without the assistance of my coaches and teammates,” Walz said.

“It is an honor and a privilege for each of these young ladies to have earned recognition at the All-State level,” said Prep coach Doug Chuzie. “I couldn’t be more proud of what they and their teammates have accomplished this year. All three players are extremely talented, but most importantly they are great people that play the game of basketball the right way.”

Class 3A explosive scorers

The three all-state selections in Class 3A are all 1,000-point scorers and two can shatter records. Kulyk and Presser-Palmer were named to the second team and Krarup to the third team.

Kulyk, a New Jersey Institute of Technology recruit, scored 17.9 points per game this winter as the Lakers won the D-10 3A title and made a run to the PIAA semifinals. She finished as one of the top scorers in Mercyhurst Prep history with more than 1,500 career points and was also named all-state as a junior.

“It’s an amazing accomplishment that could not have been done without the support and hard work from my teammates and coaches throughout my high school career,” Kulyk said. “As well as the endless support from my family and friends.”

“Being named all-state is a great honor for Olivia. She has worked really hard every year to keep getting better at her game,” said Mercyhurst Prep coach Dan Perfetto. “She has meant a lot to our basketball program and Mercyhurst Prep over her four years. I am just really happy and proud of her.”

Presser-Palmer led all of D-10 with 24.7 points per game as a sophomore. She went over 1,000 career points in the playoffs and has the potential to become the second player in Erie County history to reach 2,000 career points in two years.

“I am glad that my hard work is paying off,” Presser-Palmer said. “I just play every game like it's my last.”

“Makayla is an extremely hard worker. She puts countless hours in the gym outside of practice, and I know that this is just the beginning of many great accomplishments for her,” said Northwestern coach Julia Shipton.

Krarup, who was named to the third team as a sophomore, is a junior at Wilmington and is already the all-time leading scorer in program history. She averaged 19.3 points per game this winter and could be in for a big senior season.

Class 2A domination

D-10 had its biggest representation on the Class 2A all-state team. Not only was Fields a first-team selection with 20.6 points per game but she was also named the 2A player of the year in the state for the second-straight year after leading the Golden Eagles to another state title.
