Whether you’re spending a few hundred dollars or dropping several thousand, a new mattress is a high-stakes purchase that can make or break how well you sleep at night. But with the enormous number of brands available — and models within brands having different names at different stores — where you buy a mattress can be just as important as the brand or model you choose.

With that in mind, GOBankingRates has done the research for you and compiled a list of some of the best places to buy your next mattress.

Amazon

Few stores online or off can rival the selection of mattresses you’ll find on Amazon.com. Prices range from under $300 to over $5,000, and popular brands like Beautyrest, Serta and Sealy are well represented. Amazon also carries many private label mattresses, including its Amazon Basics brand. In addition, Amazon has exclusives, including the Nod line of mattresses from Tuft & Needle, and mattresses from manufacturers like Nectar that use Amazon’s platform to sell their products.

While you’re shopping on Amazon.com, remember to check out the Amazon Warehouse. That’s where you’ll find discounts on open-box mattresses and mattresses with damaged packaging.

A 100-night trial gives you plenty of time to try out your new mattress.

Pros

  • Enormous selection, including discounted open-box models

  • 100-night trial

  • Fast, free shipping with Amazon Prime

Cons

  • Must buy without trying

  • No setup option for delivery

Bear

Bear has a small selection of mattresses that include foam and hybrid options. They range from $998 for a 10-inch graphite memory foam mattress to $2,111 for an elite 14-inch hybrid. The prices are some of the best around, and Bear also delivers great service.

Bear mattress purchases include free contactless delivery, with the option of adding white-glove service for $100 to $200, depending on what you need set up or hauled away.

Mattresses have a 120-night trial. If you’re not satisfied after sleeping on the mattress for 30 days, you can return it at no charge.

A lifetime warranty protects your investment. If at any time you find a defect in workmanship or materials, Bear will replace your mattress at no cost to you.

Pros

  • Free basic shipping

  • Comprehensive white-glove services

  • 120-night trial

  • Lifetime warranty

  • Interest-free financing

Cons

  • Limited selection

Casper

Casper makes and sells premium mattresses-in-a-box designed by its research and engineering team at Casper Labs. The selection includes just four mattresses, with prices ranging from $1,296 for the Original model to $2,895 for the Wave Hybrid.

You’ll want to shop at a Casper store, if possible, to get the best experience — such as a nap appointment when you can try out mattresses in private, with the assistance of a sleep specialist.

All of Casper’s mattresses come with a 100-night risk-free trial and a 10-year limited warranty. You can return the mattress for free after you’ve tried it for 30 days.

Basic shipping is free in the 48 contiguous states and Canada, and return shipping is free in all locations. For $199, you can upgrade to in-home delivery and setup, which includes removal of your old mattress.

Pros

  • Reasonable prices

  • 100-night trial

  • Personalized sales service

  • Free deliveries and returns

  • 0% financing with Affirm

Cons

  • Very limited selection

Mattress Firm

Mattress Firm offers the large selection of an online retailer plus over 2,400 physical stores where you can try before you buy. Products include major brands such as Sealy, Sleepy’s and Serta as well as lower-priced options like Zinus. All mattresses come with a low-price guarantee — if you find the same mattress or a comparable one advertised for less within 120 days, Mattress Firm will refund the difference.

Two-day delivery is available for some mattresses. Otherwise, it takes about a week for most products, but there’s no charge for basic, contactless service.

Once you get your mattress home, you’ll have 120 nights to try it out. You’ll have to keep it for at least 21 nights, but after that, you can exchange it for $99.99, which will be credited toward your purchase of a replacement, plus a 10% ($250 maximum) restocking fee.

Pros

  • Excellent selection

  • Low-price guarantee

  • Several delivery options

  • Leasing for customers with thin or damaged credit

Cons

  • Exchange and restocking fees for returns

Nectar

Nectar has just three mattresses to choose from, but they’re all high-quality choices with five layers and at least 12 inches of thickness. Prices range from $1,498 for a Nectar mattress with standard pressure relief and more modest cooling to $2,298 for the Premier Copper model. All are highly rated, but where Nectar really shines is with its trial and return policies.

You get 365 nights to try out your mattress. If you don’t like it, Nectar will help you find a donation center for it and issue you a full refund. And if you ever find a defect in workmanship or materials, you’re covered by a lifetime warranty. Nectar will replace a mattress you’ve had for 10 years or less, at its own expense, or fully repair a mattress you’ve had for more than 10 years.

Pros

  • Outstanding trial period and warranty

  • Reasonable prices

  • Free shipping and returns in the contiguous U.S.

  • Six-month 0% financing

Cons

  • Just three models to choose from

  • No white-glove delivery option

Overstock

Overstock carries an extensive selection of mattresses and mattress sets, including adjustable beds, often at significant discounts. Prices run the gamut from under-$200 8-inch bamboo memory foam mattresses to a 16-inch Stearns & Foster pillowtop mattress set for $5,764.

Many mattresses on Overstock qualify for free standard delivery and ship within one or two business days. Having your mattress carried inside, having it placed in the room of your choice and removal of your old mattress are extra.

Overstock is the only store on the list that doesn’t offer a free trial. Mattresses are nonreturnable unless they’re damaged or defective and you refuse them upon delivery. Otherwise, your refund is prorated.

Pros

  • Large selection

  • Well-organized website

  • Good prices

  • Fast delivery on some items

  • Bundled pillows, sheets and mattress protector

Cons

  • No trial

  • No full refunds even on damaged products unless you refuse delivery

Purple

Purple breaks the foam-mattress mold with its GelFlex Grid, the deep waffle-like top layer the brand is known for. All Purple mattresses have it, but the higher-end Hybrid and Hybrid Premier versions have thicker grid layers plus coil layers sandwiched between foam. All told, Purple has five different mattresses available on its website, with queen prices ranging from $1,399 to $3,799.

As with the other stores on this list, Purple offers a 100-night trial. If you don’t like your mattress, Purple will pick it up for free and issue a refund. The only catch is that you have to sleep on it for 21 nights before returning or exchanging it. A 10-year warranty begins on the date of your original purchase.

Shipping is free at Purple. Complimentary white-glove service is available for select mattresses.

Pros

  • Unique product

  • 100-night trial

  • Free shipping

Cons

  • Limited selection

Sleep Number

Sleep Number has four product lines: the Classic mattress that made it famous, plus two upgraded versions and a memory foam mattress. All have dual adjustability and Responsive Air technology and come with a 15-year warranty.

The 100-night trial Sleep Number offers lets you exchange your mattress if you’re not satisfied after having slept on it for 30 days.

If you live within Sleep Number’s standard delivery area, you should have your mattress within two weeks with standard delivery. Outside of that area, delivery can take up to eight weeks. Delivery options vary by mattress and location, and some deliveries incur fees.

Pros

  • Unique products

  • InnerCircle loyalty program with member perks

  • 100-night trial

Cons

  • Slow shipping

  • Complicated delivery policy

Saatva

Saatva is a luxury mattress store that’s unique in that it has a limited product line, but the line includes a good variety of mattress types, including foam, foam hybrid and adjustable-firmness options. Prices on queen mattresses start at $1,595 for a memory foam hybrid. The adjustable-firmness Solair is Saatva’s top-of-the-line mattress, and a queen size retails for $3,570.

A distinguishing feature of Saatva is its customer service, which is available 24/7 via chat or phone. And Saatva gives you a full year to decide whether to keep your mattress. However, if you decide to return it, you’ll pay a $99 processing fee for pickup.

Pros

  • Small but varied selection

  • Outstanding customer service

  • Free white-glove delivery

  • 365-day trial

Cons

  • Delivery can take up to 29 days

  • Pickup fee for mattresses returned during trial period

Tuft & Needle

Tuft & Needle was one of the earliest retailers to sell boxed mattresses. Rather than use memory foam, it created and patented a material called Adaptive foam, which the company says provides superior cooling and support. In addition to 100% Adaptive foam mattresses, Tuft & Needle has a hybrid model that combines foam with springs. Regular queen prices range from a very reasonable $995 to $1,995.

In addition to selling mattresses from its website, Tuft & Needle offers mattresses at its retail stores located in Arizona, California, Kansas, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas and Washington. Interest-free financing is available through Affirm.

Shipping options include free standard shipping, usually within two to seven business days, and white-glove delivery that includes setup and removal of your old mattress for a $150 fee. Same-day shipping is available in select locations for a $50 fee.

Pros

  • 10-year warranty

  • 100-day trial with no charge for returns

  • Fast shipping

Cons

  • Limited selection

What To Look For in a Mattress Store

Value and selection are important factors to consider when you’re making a large purchase like a mattress, but they’re not the only ones. Also consider the following:

  • Warranty: Look at both the length of a warranty and the fine print explaining what it covers — and what it doesn’t.

  • Delivery: Some stores only provide free delivery to the curb or doorstep. If you need help setting up your new mattress and removing the old one, make sure the store you purchase from provides those services and discloses any fees.

  • Free trial: As the stores on this list show, months-long free trials are common. However, some stores charge an exchange and/or restocking fee, and others don’t allow returns after you’ve accepted a delivery.

  • Financing: Considering that you could pay several thousand dollars for a mattress, it makes sense to use a store with interest-free financing if you want to charge your purchase.
