1 person dies, 2 injured in three-vehicle crash on State 21 in town of Omro

TOWN OF OMRO — One person has died after a three-vehicle crash on State 21 near Sand Pit Road in the town of Omro Thursday afternoon.

Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Thursday evening that the sheriff’s office, Omro Rushford Fire Department, Oshkosh Fire Department, Omro Police Department and Wisconsin State Patrol responded to the scene shortly after 2:30 p.m. Thursday for the report of the three-vehicle crash with one of the vehicles being fully engulfed in fire.

When first responders arrived, they found one deceased driver inside the burning vehicle. The driver’s identity was not immediately released pending notification of family.

The drivers of the other two vehicles were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

As of Thursday evening, the sheriff’s office said the site of the crash remained an active scene and the cause of the crash was under investigation by the sheriff’s office.

Both east and west lanes of State 21 were still closed Thursday evening from North Oakwood Road to County FF for the investigation and clean-up, and the sheriff’s office said they would likely remain closed through the evening.

The sheriff’s office Crash Reconstruction Team, Drone Unit and Winnebago County Medical Examiner’s Office were all assisting with the investigation with assistance from Winnebago County Highway Department and Expert Towing.

The sheriff’s office said no further details would be immediately released Thursday evening.
