1 Million Vehicles Affected By Toyota's Latest Recall

A new voluntary recall from Toyota includes around 1 million vehicles, both Toyota and Lexus, from between 2020 and 2022.

The company announced the extensive recall on Dec. 20, recalling the vehicles in the U.S. due to a safety issue. The reason behind the recall is the cars' Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensors for the front passenger seat.

The system can reportedly cause a short circuit, which would affect how accurately the system can measure the weight of the person in the passenger seat. This could lead the airbag to not go off as it was designed to in certain situations.

Toyota stated that all recalled vehicles will have their OCS sensors inspected and replaced if needed, at no cost to the vehicle owner.

The vehicles that are part of the recall are, for Toyota, the 2020-2021 Avalon and Avalon Hybrid, the 2020-2022 Camry and Camry Hybrid, the 2020-2021 Corolla, the 2020-2021 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, the 2020-2021 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid, and the 2021 Sienna Hybrid.

For Lexus, this includes the 2021 ES250, the 2020-2022 ES300H, the 2020-2021 ES350, the 2020-2021 RX350, and the 2020-2021 RX450h.

The recall also stated that owners will be notified by Toyota by the middle of next February 2024. To check if your car is part of an ongoing recall, you can head over to Toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls and fill out the requested Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate number.

According to CNN, a representative of Toyota did not confirm whether or not Toyota was aware of any accidents or injuries occurring as a result of the issue listed in the recall.

Back in November, Toyota issued another far-reaching voluntary recall for RAV4 models between 2013 and 2018. The issue cited in the recall related to the cars' batteries having the potential to catch fire. Over 1.8 million vehicles were included in the recall.
