One college student was killed and dozens of others were injured in a bus crash in Massachusetts, officials said.

A shuttle bus was carrying 27 Brandeis University students after a hockey game at Northeastern University on Saturday, Nov. 19, when it crashed into a tree just after 10:30 p.m. in Waltham, according to a news release from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, which was shared on Facebook by the Waltham Police Department.

One student was pronounced dead on the scene, the district attorney’s office said. Officials had not publicly released the person’s name as of the morning of Sunday, Nov. 20.

The 26 other students and the bus driver were taken to a hospital with “injuries of varying degrees,” the office said.

A message on Brandeis University’s website Sunday morning said the school is “working with local hospitals and the Waltham Police department to identify those who were injured as well as the individual who died at the scene.”

“Given the number of injured people and the different hospitals to which they were transported, it is taking time to determine the status of everyone involved, including which passengers are Brandeis students,” the school said.

It said, based on preliminary information from the hospitals where victims were taken, that it believes 17 people have been released and that 11 “have been admitted for further care.”

Brandeis University said in a statement to NBC Boston that the bus was taking the students back to the campus in Waltham “from a Cambridge and Boston route” when the crash occurred.

“Brandeis has notified students, faculty and staff of the accident; we are providing counseling and support to students and will continue to do so over the coming days,” the school said, according to NBC Boston.

The university wrote on Twitter that its counseling center is “here to provide extra support and can be reached 24-7 at 781-736-3730 and is available to assist students throughout the night in the face of the shuttle accident.”

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, and the district attorney’s office said no one has been charged.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 781-314-3600, officials said.

Brandeis University is “a medium-sized private research university” that is “located in the suburbs of Boston,” according to its website.
