So, you've decided to get away from it all. That's great -- but a little non-specific. If you're not sure what you want to do or what you can afford, you've come to the right place. Here are five terrific and affordable weekend getaway ideas that are sure to inspire you, and make you the hero of your relationship or family.

1. The Beach.

Going to the beach is one of the most classic weekend getaway ideas. Drive yourself to the nearest body of water, rent a room and enjoy. If it's winter, you may have to jump on a plane to catch the rays you want. Check out direct flights to Mexico, Hawaii and the Caribbean from your nearest airport to find the cheapest deals, and look for some suped-up "winter getaway packages" to save extra money and get more perks.

2. The World's Biggest Something.

Ah, America, land of the enormous roadside attractions. Indulge yourself in a little Americana: hop in the car and drive to your nearest oddity. Why? It's fun! Our sister site, Gadling, has lists of the best roadside attractions on the east and west coasts, and 10 Midwest roadside attractions you must see, and here's our photo gallery of Unusual Wonders of the United States.

3. A Random Museum.

Along with those "world's biggest" attractions come some very weird museums. You'll find some in the links above, but also check out Neatorama's list. You'll find some weekend getaway ideas which are too bizarre to miss.

4. A Bed and Breakfast.

This is another one of those classic affordable weekend getaway ideas that stands the test of time for couples; it's the perfect romantic jumpstart. Ask around, and check out any B&B's within a three hour drive from your town. Think scenery -- or at least an exceptionally beautiful room, and make sure there's a quaint town with a terrific restaurant to explore.

5. Action and Adventure Getaways.

Horseback riding, rock climbing, hiking, skydiving, bungee jumping, skiing, whitewater rafting and zip-lining are just some of the action and adventure weekend getaway ideas out there. If you and your significant other or family need a real recharge, relaxing may not be the best idea. Instead, go for an adrenaline rush -- the bragging rights will be just the icing on the cake.
