Washing your face is no doubt an integral part of your beauty routine. And we hope you know the No. 1 rule when it comes to finding the perfect cleanser: Pick the formula based on your skin type. But, what you may not know is that there also benefits to using a second, different face wash at night -- one very different than what you usually use during your AM routine.

Sharon Pichoto, an aesthetician at Martlon, New Jersey-based Suede Salon Spa and Body, alternates between two different formulas because her needs are different both morning and night.

Because makeup is applied after cleansing, look for a formula that doesn't overly dry skin. Otherwise, makeup can flake and take on that whole cakey-looking thing. "CosMedix Benefit Clean Gentle Cleanser ($33) works well for a morning cleanser because [the antioxidant-loaded formula] is refreshing, but doesn't dry out your skin," says Pichoto. Your morning cleanser should not involve any exfoliation (which strips the skin), but rather focus on soothing, cleaning and hydrating your mug. Makeup layered on top will apply more smoothly. Other AM cleansers we love: Philosophy Purity Made Simple ($36), Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser ($9) 11 Main Milk & Aloe Gentle Face Cleanser ($14).

At night, she opts for an oil cleanser. And why it may seem counterintuitive, remember that "oil cuts through oil, which helps remove excess oil, dirt and makeup." At the end of the day you want to, of course, remove all of the grime, but also prep skin to revive itself while you sleep. And a oil-based cleanser just does that. Pichoto applies CosMedix Purity Solution Deep Cleansing Oil ($35) directly to her face (it gets a little messy as it begins to remove the makeup), then she adds water so the wash will foam before rinsing. The result is clean, supple skin ready to hit the pillow. Other PM cleansers to try: Dolce & Gabbana Essential Cleansing Oil ($47), L'Occitane Shea Cleansing Oil ($22), Garnier Clean + Nourishing Cleansing Oil for Dry Skin ($7).
