8 Products That Work Better Than Botox

NO. 8: DERMAGIST ORIGINAL WRINKLE SMOOTHING CREAM, $99

Key ingredient: Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3 (aka Matrixyl)

Besides being impossible to pronounce, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3 is a powerful ingredient when it comes to stimulating collagen production. King says it will "improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles" over time. The makers of Matrixyl say it works even better when combined with other peptides, since they boost the power of each other and work on different aspects of the aging process, so you may want to use this along with a few other products on this list.

NO. 7: OLAY TOTAL EFFECTS EYE TRANSFORMING CREAM, $16.99

Key ingredients: Niacinamide, vitamin B5, vitamin B3

Arthur Perry, MD, YouBeauty.com Cosmetic Surgery Expert, says ingredients like vitamins B3 and B5 (niacinamide is another term for B vitamins) are some of the best studied when it comes to "chemicals capable of stimulating collagen and decreasing wrinkles." However, he cautions that you must be patient when using these products. "Don't expect fast results," Perry says. "You lose 1 percent of the collagen in your skin each year and it's almost like parting an ocean to stall that effect and even more difficult to actually build up new collagen. My patients who use good skin care programs don't really see any lessening of wrinkles before six months."

NO. 6: SHISEIDO BENEFIANCE PURE RETINOL INTENSIVE REVITALIZING FACE MASK, $69

Key ingredients: Retinol, vitamin C

NO. 5: GOLDFADEN SLEEP RENEWAL NIGHT CREAM, $70

Key ingredients: Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA), hyaluronic acid, vitamin C

You may already be familiar with hyaluronic acid's ability to moisturize and "plump" skin, and we've mentioned that vitamin C can help with collagen production and evening skin tone. GABA is probably new to you -- but it's definitely worth knowing. Murad says that GABA can "have a tightening and 'freezing' effect similar to what occurs following Botox injections." Of course, since this is a topical product, the effect is only temporary.

NO. 2: PH ADVANTAGE LIP ADVANTAGE, $30

Key ingredients: GABA, vitamin A, vitamin C, palmitoyl oligopeptide

The ingredients in this product put it light years beyond your usual lip balm. The vitamin A works similarly as retinol to exfoliate and smooth wrinkles; the vitamin C helps firm lips and even skin tone; the GABA smoothes wrinkles; and the peptides help with collagen. The GABA results only last about six to eight hours, but you can always reapply.

Key ingredients: GABA, retinol, vitamin A, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, palmitoyl tetrapeptide

Botox has its fair share of pros and cons.

Tops on the list of the pros? It zaps wrinkles almost instantly and gives you long-lasting results despite the short-term pain.

But settling into your dermatologist's chair for injections isn't as easy breezy as it sounds. Shots can be painful and cause bruising (remember Kim Kardashian's post-Botox debacle?). And at $350 a pop, injections certainly aren't cheap.

But is there a way to avoid injections and still end up with smooth, wrinkle-free skin?

Short answer: Yes. You can achieve similar wrinkle-reducing results from topical beauty products. But here's the catch: Only if you're willing to be patient. Topical ingredients can take up to six months to show results, but they're worth it.

"There are very sophisticated ingredients today that have multiple skin benefits like smoothing, lightening pigment, diminishing lines, replenishing lipids, and stimulating cell renewal," says Annet King, director of the International Dermal Institute. Hey, not even Botox can do all of those things.

So if you have a few months to hang in there, you'll love these eight skin care miracle workers. They all give Botox a run for its money when it comes to fighting fine lines, and they have a ton of additional skin benefits as well.

Also, if you really want to decrease your need for Botox, Howard Murad, MD, founder and CEO of Murad, recommends eating right, exercising, and keeping your stress under control. "Quite honestly, I have seen better total body results in my patients following [a healthy lifestyle] program than with cosmetic fillers and injectibles," he says.

So here's your new plan: Take care of yourself, and start using these eight better-than-Botox beauty products.
