Description:Nearly 180 people lost their lives when typhoon Washi smashed into the southern Philippines island of Mindanao. It's feared the figure will rise. Some perished in landslides triggered by heavy rain. Most drowned as flash floods swept into homes while the occupants were sleeping. Many more are unaccounted for. The storm was gusting up to 90 kilometres an hour. Troops and police launched an operation to recover the bodies of the casualties and evacuate people from their homes.(1:00)
