Description:With potentially historic Hurricane Sandy barreling toward the tri-state area, the MTA shut down the region's mass-transportation system and city officials have enacted mandatory evacuations for the more than a quarter-of-a-million residents of low-lying areas. The transit shutdown process began at 7 p.m. Sunday and concluded by the early morning. PATH service ended at midnight.
