3 steps to smudge-proof eyeliner

Before you go, we thought you'd like these...

I don't know what's worse: an unplanned undereye smudge or an unplanned smudgy lid. (Carefully orchestrated smudging, on the other hand: gorgeous.) Personally, I struggle most with my inky-black cat eye creasing on my lids midday. So I reached out to celebrity makeup artist Sarah Tanno for help. Follow her three-step plan-and consider your eyeliner tattooed on.
  1. Dab a makeup primer across your lids. Primers act like shields against oil, sweat, and basically anything that might make your eyeliner wear off throughout the day. Tanno recommends either Make Up For Ever HD Microperfecting Primer or Nars Multi-Protect Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 15. Both are light and oil-free. And don't use foundation on your lids; most contain emollients that will make your liner more likely to slip and smudge.
  2. Be patient. "Apply your eyeliner as close to your lash line as possible, and keep that eye closed for a few seconds while the color sets," says Tanno. This goes for any type of liner-pencil, cream, or liquid. Apply a second coat for extra staying power.
  3. Set the look. Close your eyes and spritz on a finishing spray, like Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray. Then lightly dust the whole eye area with your powder bronzer or blush. It will tie your makeup look together and help set your liner so it looks freshly applied all day.
