A semi-truck trailer filled with vegetables caught fire early Monday morning on Highway 46 East in Paso Robles, according to Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at Highway 46 and Mill Road about 4:05 a.m. Monday, the agency said in a news release.

“The first arriving unit reported a semi-truck trailer heavily involved (in flames) with a threat to the adjacent vegetation,” the release said. “Crews were able to quickly get the fire controlled and made access inside.”

When firefighters looked inside the charred remains of the trailer, they found pallets of boxed asparagus, Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services said.

The fire originated in the axle area of the semi-truck trailer and was likely caused by mechanical failure, Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services Battalion Chief Randy Harris wrote in an email.

The driver was able to disconnect from the flaming trailer before the fire spread, Harris said.

“Thankfully,” Harris said, there were no injuries.

The responding units included two fire units and one chief officer from Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services, according to the release.

A Cal Fire engine also responded under the automatic aid agreement between the city of Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo County, while Paso Robles Police Department officers provided traffic control, the release said.
