The Worst Human Foods for Your Dog

Because they're "man's best friend," it probably seems pretty harmless to share some of your lunch with your dog. However, many foods that seem perfectly fine to us are actually potentially fatal to canines. So be sure to keep an eye on what you drop on the floor, and what you decide to share with your pet.

By now most people are aware that chocolate is very bad for dogs. That's because the very chemical that gives dark chocolate its distinct flavor is toxic to dogs. Cocoa beans contain caffeine and theobromine, which dogs cannot metabolize as efficiently as humans can. This makes chocolate poisonous to our little furry friends.

It's not just chocolate that is poisonous to dogs, though. Most people aren't aware that grapes can be harmful to dogs too, because they can cause kidney damage. Garlic and onions can be toxic to dogs as well, because they have the potential to harm red blood cell production.

Even avocados can be potentially harmful to dogs. They contain the chemical percin, which can cause an obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. Do you let fido lick a scoop off your ice cream cone? You may want to rethink that. Ice cream can also cause intestinal problems in dogs.
