Pigs in a Blanket

Pigs in a Blanket

Everyone loves Pigs in a Blanket (or Wiener Winks, as I like to call them). Sometimes I can’t help but make these delicious little suckers for dinner. Not the healthiest of entrees, but there are some great products on the market now that help make them a little more natural. Here are my picks:

  1. Immaculate Baking Co. Crescent Rolls. Only 100 calories per flaky, buttery roll, and zero trans fat.
  2. Trader Joe’s Organic American Cheese Slices. Finally, plastic cheese has gone organic. If there’s not a Trader Joe’s near you, look for Wholesome Valley Slices. You only need half of this 50 calorie American slice per crescent roll.
  3. Tillamook Sliced Sharp Cheddar Slices. If you prefer the real cheddar route, these are easy, delicious, and rBGH-free. Again, only need half a slice per crescent roll.
  4. Applegate Farms Great Organic Hot Dog. These organic, uncured, grass-fed beef dogs will make your belly as happy as your conscience. Prefer turkey dogs? Applegate Farms has those too, also organic and also yummy.

Ingredients

  • 1 container crescent roll
  • 4 hot dog of choice, cut in half
  • 4 square slice of cheese, cut in half

Directions

Preheat oven to 375.  Unwrap crescent rolls and separate or cut into triangles.  Place half a hot dog and half a cheese slices on the inside of each triangle and roll up.  Bake on a parchment-lined baking sheet for about 15 minutes or until cheese is melting out the sides and rolls are golden brown.  Dip into mustard, ketchup, or BBQ sauce.

Make sure to serve these alongside a big salad or pile of veggies, so they’re not only tasty, but also part of a pseudo-balanced meal.  I promise you’ll have happy customers…
