Three Weeks

"They say that it takes three weeks to form a new habit or three weeks to break a bad one," Daphne explains. "Whether it is cracking your knuckles or being addicted to sugar, it's going to take you three weeks of not doing those things before you can actually feel comfortable. If you try a sugar cleanse or don't eat any kind of sweetener for three weeks, it is actually amazing how quickly your tongue and your palate starts to recalibrate."

Getting Healthy In The New Year

"My thoughts on establishing a healthy lifestyle in the new year: I don't eat calories that don't mean anything to me. I don't drink a lot of soda. Those are places where you are adding a ton of calories to your day and you might not even recognize you are doing it because the satisfaction you get from them is so limited and the memory so fleeting. If you are someone who has a terrible eating lifestyle, maybe try cutting out one thing. If you are already pretty healthy, try adding something more healthy or [always] eating breakfast," says Daphne.

Have A Game Plan

"Give yourself a goal. My favorite thing to do is start January with a three week cleanse. I do no dairy, no meat, no alcohol, no sugar and no gluten and it is incredible. You feel like crap the first three days because your body is detoxing so much junk you build up over the holidays and the year and then you start to see these incredible effects. The whites of your eyes are whiter, you are sleeping better, you are less foggy, your digestive tract works amazingly, you don't get headaches, you have more energy in the day even without the caffeine. When you experience what your body runs like on optimum fuel, it is almost hard to go back to the regular way of eating because you feel like such crap all over again. The reason I'm capable of doing that - someone who doesn't like restrictions - is because I know I can do three weeks. Then I don't go to fast food restaurants every day, I go back to my normal healthy eating," Daphne explains.

Be Conscious

"I think one of the big things that'll help us all is if we become a little more conscious, a little more self-aware. It takes 20 minutes from every bite you take to when your body's feedback will tell you that you are getting full. If you have already eaten your meal in the first 10 minutes, chances are you way overate and your body hasn't told you yet. So often we'll sit down to these giant meals and 20 minutes later we'll feel so sick. Eat slowly, chew your food and be conscious of when you are hungry and when you are getting full," says Daphne.

Health Food Should Be Delicious

"The number one biggest mistake is that people tell themselves is 'this is the end.' I think when people commit to a healthy lifestyle, too often they think of it as the end of their taste buds, the end of eating the foods that they love, the end of enjoying their lives basically," says Daphne. "My big thing that I'm pushing every day on the show is that healthy food can be delicious. Not even can be delicious -- should be delicious. There is no reason you should think that something that looks the way it did when it comes out of the ground should be any less delicious than something processed by a machine for a month, stuck in a bag and put on a shelf for two months before you actually get to eat it."

Preparation Matters

"I think boiling robs you of a lot of nutrition. I tend to a quick sautee [on] a lot of raw vegetables. I steam things. If you are using a nonstick pan, you need less oil than you think -- just enough to coat the ingredients. I find that for me, fat isn't the enemy. It isn't thing that is hurting us; it is having bad quality fats and having too much of them. So, if you are sticking with good quality coconut oil or olive oil, small amounts of real butter, healthy fats from eggs and things like that, you really are doing yourself a favor. Fat carries flavors, fat makes you feel satisfied. I'd always rather have a small portion of a really good thing than a huge portion of a mediocre thing. Those are the cooking techniques I really stick to," says Daphne.
