Free Printable: March Madness DIY Cupcake Toppers

To help you kick off the first week of March Madness, the editors at Kitchen Daily tapped in to their inner Martha Stewart to bring you this craft tutorial for March Madness-themed cupcake toppers along with free printable templates.

The template makes three different kinds of cupcake toppers: pennants with fun sports-themed chants, basketballs going throw hoops and basketballs on a referee-stripe pattern circle. Have fun mixing up all three designs if you'd like!

You can assemble the toppers with tape, but we strongly recommend using wet glue and glue sticks for a finished look.

Layering the basketball over the hoop or the striped circle creates a nice 3-D effect.

Wouldn't this line-up of pennant-topped cupcakes look cute cheering your team on as part of the party spread?

We liked the look of mixing up where the basketball hits the rim of the hoop.

For a party perfect look, set up your cupcakes on a cake stand with themed linens - we stuck with referee stripes for a team-neutral look.

Enough staring - it's time to eat! If your hands are itching to get their bake on, we've got you covered with our favorite recipes for cupcakes. From classic vanilla to something a little more adventurous, read on to discover these and more delicious baked treats.

Materials

  • white heavy cardstock paper
  • wooden skewers (lollipop sticks or toothpicks could also work)
  • scissors
  • glue

Instructions:

  1. Print out the free cupcake topper template on white heavy cardstock paper. For the pennants, you can choose to use the multicolored set or print out and personalize the black and white set with your favorite team's colors.
  2. Cut out each piece with scissors. We suggest using scalloped edge scissors to cut along the outline of the black and white striped circle for a prettier look.
  3. Assemble the pennant topper:
Gently fold along the vertical line in the center of each flag. Glue one end of a wooden skew along the crease, and then glue the tips of the flag together.
  4. Assemble the basketball in the hoop topper:
Glue one end of a wooden skewer on top of a hoop pointing toward the center, and then glue a basketball on top of the skewer to hide the end. We like to switch up the position of the basketball - they can't all be nothin' but net!
  5. Assemble the basketball on striped circle topper:
Glue one end of a wooden skewer on top of a striped circle pointing toward the center, and then glue a basketball on top of the skewer to hide the end.

For more fun cupcake decorating ideas, try these easy tips:

  • Use colored wooden skewers - store-bought or dyed at home with food coloring - to emphasize your favorite team's colors.
  • Switch out cupcake liners with fun prints and team-specific colors.
  • Score points with sprinkles and edible glitter.
