Butterball opens its turkey hotline (1-800-Butterball) in November and December, and the service has expanded beyond phone calls and emails to its website, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and live chats!

Butterball started the hotline in 1981 with six home economists that answered 11,000 phone calls that year.

That number has grown to more than 50 professionally trained turkey experts, who are expected to answer more than 100,000 questions and help more than a million cooks!

Last year, the Butterball's hotline added its first male Talk-Line expert to the team. According to Butterball's blog, approximately one in four callers is male.

In a Today interview, talk-line expert Nicole Johnson revealed that the most anxious callers are often first-time cooks, newlyweds and men who are new to the kitchen.

The experts are trained at Butterball University, where they are taught the basics and advanced tips and tricks. For example, experts must learn how to cook a turkey in multiple ways, such as with an electric roaster, in a closed pan and using an oven bag.

The most common question the hotline receives are about thawing the turkey, reports WBIR.

Not sure what's the best way to thaw a turkey or when it's done cooking? Preparing a turkey for Thanksgiving can be stressful for the home cook, especially when he or she is new to the kitchen or hosting guests. Thankfully, Butterball just opened their Turkey Talk-Line (1-800-BUTTERBALL), and their turkey experts can answer your questions and provide advice. For more than 30 years, the hotline has been helping cooks tackle the turkey (and in a way, be your therapist for the holidays).
