We racked our brains and came up with 10 great ways to use this accessible, versatile ingredient at home.

Boil Pasta in It

Nobody likes dry pasta right out of the box. For perfectly al dente pasta, heat water in a saucepan over high heat. When there are lots of big bubbles coming to the surface of the water, that means it's boiling and ready for your pasta. Cook the pasta according to the directions on the box, and you can use some of the leftover pasta water to make a delicious sauce.

Make Ice

Grab an ice cube tray and fill each gap with water until it's almost full (you don't want to fill them too much, or the ice will be difficult to get out of the tray). Then place the tray in your freezer for about 2 hours, or until ice is frozen solid. Most people like to use ice to chill their beverages (and some even like it in their beer).

Water an Herb Garden

Herbs are plants, and plants need water to grow into healthy, usable cooking ingredients. Most gardeners water their herbs in the morning so that they can dry out in the sunshine during the day. Be careful not to over-water--not every living thing requires eight glasses of water a day (like humans do).

Put It in a Bottle and Take It to Go

Drinking water on-the-go is a great way to get your H2O fix. If the neck of your bottle is narrow, use a funnel for a mess-free pour.

Poach Eggs

From eggs benedict to a topping for spring risotto, poached eggs are a great way to round out a meal. But you can't poach an egg without water. Here's Thomas Keller's foolproof method.

Make Hot Tea

Tea is made of almost 100 percent water. Get your favorite loose-leaf tea or tea bag, boil your water in a tea kettle (you can use a saucepan if you don't have a stove-top kettle or a fancy electric kettle), then steep your tea for a warming, satisfying hot drink.

Steam Things

Nothing says "healthy" like a plate of steamed fish and vegetables. Add herbs and spices to your water before you steam for a flavor boost.
