'Mission accomplished': Trump says attack on Syria was 'perfectly executed'

Hours after ordering precision airstrikes against Syria, President Trump took to Twitter Saturday morning and declared, “Mission Accomplished!”

“A perfectly executed strike last night. Thank you to France and the United Kingdom for their wisdom and the power of their fine Military. Could not have had a better result. Mission Accomplished!” Trump tweeted.

“So proud of our great Military which will soon be, after the spending of billions of fully approved dollars, the finest that our Country has ever had,” Trump wrote in another tweet minutes later. “There won’t be anything, or anyone, even close!”

The U.K. and France joined the U.S. in the coordinated attack Friday night.

The New York Times noted that the strikes were aimed at “Syrian research, storage and military targets as President Trump sought to punish President Bashar al-Assad for a suspected chemical attack near Damascus last weekend that killed more than 40 people.”

As the attack was underway, Trump delivered an address to the nation, referring to Assad as a “monster.”

“The purpose of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread, and use of chemical weapons,” Trump said. “Establishing this deterrent is a vital national security interest of the United States.”
