Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz seen 'smiling and giggling' in Broward County jail

Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz has been “smiling and giggling” behind bars, according to observation reports that describe his behavior in the Broward County Jail.

Cruz started in the infirmary and was transferred to an isolated cell on Feb. 23, according to documents obtained by CNN.

On Feb. 24, he was visited by an unidentified family member. His only other visitors have been his defense attorneys and physicians, according to the report.

Deputies described Cruz as “well-groomed” in observation reports from Feb. 17 to 24.

He had a “quiet demeanor,” “follows commands,” and “talks softly,” a deputy noted on Feb. 19.

Another report painted a picture of him as a cooperative inmate who was “very engaged, responsive” and “talkative” in an attorney/doctor interview on Feb. 18.

Deputies noted on multiple evenings that Cruz would lie in bed “but does not appear to sleep.”

On Feb. 20, Cruz broke out in an unexplained fit of laughter.

“Appeared to break out in laughter both during and immediately following his professional visit at 1848 hours and later at 1910 hours,” the report read.

His demeanor was described as “relaxed,” despite an apparent inability to sleep soundly. On Feb. 21 he was described as “tossing and turning” throughout the evening.

A deputy described him as “engaged” in conversation with his attorney.

On Feb. 23, the day he was moved, a deputy observed Cruz “smiling and giggling.”

On Feb. 24, he requested to read a Bible before another restless night of sleep, according to a deputy.

“(Twists) and turns in bunk, does not sleep, stares at wall in deep thought, eyes closed, appears to be resting, not asleep.”
