Porter was reportedly being considered for promotion before departure

Rob Porter, the former White House staff secretary, was reportedly being considered for a promotion just prior to resigning over abuse allegations.

CNN, citing “multiple sources familiar with the matter,” states that Porter was looking to expand his responsibilities beyond what his position traditionally entails.

He was said to be seeking “speechwriting duties and a role in planning policy rollouts” and involvement with trade policy.

Porter was also reportedly among those in the running for the deputy chief of staff post.

According to The Hill, “White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Monday that the White House learned the full extent of the Porter allegations last Tuesday.”

The White House’s statements on Porter’s departure seem to be inconsistent with FBI director Christopher Wray’s Tuesday testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

He said the background investigation into Porter was completed in July and findings from a requested follow-up inquiry were provided in November. Additional information was passed along in the early days of February.
