President Trump in wake of Rob Porter scandal: Lives are being 'destroyed by a mere allegation'

In the wake of abuse accusations against former White House staff secretary Rob Porter, President Trump tweeted Saturday that lives are being ’destroyed" due to “mere” allegations.

“Peoples lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation. Some are true and some are false. Some are old and some are new. There is no recovery for someone falsely accused – life and career are gone. Is there no such thing any longer as Due Process?” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The president’s tweet comes after two ex-wives of Porter publicly accused him of abusing them and his subsequent resignation from the White House position.

At a press event on Friday, Trump told reporters he was surprised and saddened by the allegations.

“He did a very good job when he was in the White House. And we hope he has a wonderful career,” Trump said about Porter. “He says he’s innocent, and I think you have to remember that.”

Critics have slammed the president for not mentioning the ex-wives in his remarks.

“He said nothing about the women. Nothing about spousal abuse, he didn’t mention the women at all,” CNN’s Anderson Cooper said while referring to Trump’s statement on Friday. “The president it turns out is a remarkably understanding and forgiving guy when it comes to alleged abusers.”
