Sarah Sanders delivers sharply worded response to question about Trump’s mental fitness

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Thursday delivered a sharply worded response to a question about how President Trump is reacting to increasing questions about his mental fitness.

“The same way we have when it’s been asked before. It’s disgraceful and laughable,” she said. “If he was unfit, he probably wouldn’t be sitting there, wouldn’t have defeated the most qualified group of candidates the Republican Party has ever seen.”

“This is an incredibly strong and good leader,” Sanders further noted. “That’s why we’ve had such a successful 2017 and why we’re going to continue to do great things as we move forward in this administration.”

The recent uptick in concerns about the president’s mental fitness for office comes amid a number of high-profile incidents and reports.

Excerpts from Michael Wolff’s upcoming book ‘Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,’ reportedly portray the president as being unfocused and impervious to reason.

The same day various outlets began publishing those passages, Politico reported that a number of lawmakers had participated in an early December meeting regarding the president’s mental state.

In attendance was Yale psychiatry professor Dr. Bandy X. Lee. At the meeting, Lee reportedly warned, “He’s going to unravel, and we are seeing the signs.”

The Hill notes that Trump further contributed to the growing concern about his fitness on Tuesday evening when, in a tweet, he goaded North Korean leader Kim Jong-un about the inferior size of his “nuclear launch button.”
