Poll: More Americans support impeaching Trump than voting for him in 2020

More Americans support impeachment hearings to potentially remove President Trump than voting for his re-election, according to a new poll from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal.

The new poll released on Wednesday includes a series of troubling data returns for the 45th president, including that just about 36 percent of respondents said they would "definitely" or "probably" vote for Trump in 2020. While the poll indicates sluggish support for Trump in the event he decides to run for re-election, the poll also found 41 percent of Americans said they were in favor of Congress holding impeachment hearings for President Trump.

A majority -- 54 percent -- of respondents said they were not in favor of hearings, but that more Americans support impeachment hearings than the president in a 2020 contest may signal trouble for the commander in chief where U.S. approval is concerned.

The poll also included a question on whether respondents believe the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during the 2016 election, to which 38 percent responded "yes" and 35 percent said no. The fact that a slim majority expressed a belief that Trump's campaign worked in some way with Russia leading up to the 2016 presidential election may explain the high number of Americans that would like to see impeachment hearings occur.

The House earlier this month voted to kill a fringe effort led by Democratic Texas Rep. Al Green to bring forth articles of impeachment. The resolution was tabled by a vote of 364 to 58.

The poll of 900 people had 18 percent “definitely" believing they will vote for a second Trump term, while another 18 percent say they will "probably" cast their ballot for him.

This survey also showed 38 percent of respondents saying they definitely will not vote for Trump in 2020, preferring the incumbent’s Democratic opponent.
