Obama sounds off on Democratic victories: 'This is what happens when the people vote'

Democrats won large victories on Tuesday, claiming the governors’ posts in both Virginia and New Jersey and taking a number of state legislative positions, reports the New York Times.

"This is what happens when the people vote. Congrats @RalphNortham and @PhilMurphyNJ," President Obama wrote in a Wednesday tweet, in response to the election results. "And congratulations to all the victors in state legislative, county and mayors’ races. Every office in a democracy counts!"

Northam’s surprisingly swift win came amid what appeared to be a very tight race against Republican opponent Ed Gillespie, notes CNN.

Though Gillespie did not campaign or otherwise directly affiliate himself with President Trump, he did invoke a number of the leader’s stances.

Among them were crackdowns on sanctuary cities, the preservation of Confederate statues and the demand that all NFL players stand for the national anthem.

Despite the promotion of such shared views, Trump was quick to distance himself from Gillespie after the results.

"Ed Gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what I stand for," the president tweeted on Tuesday. "Don’t forget, Republicans won 4 out of 4 House seats, and with the economy doing record numbers, we will continue to win, even bigger than before!"
