Trump: Clinton 'would be going to trial' if Comey wasn't 'very, very good to her'

During a FOX Business interview that aired on Wednesday morning, President Trump claimed his former 2016 election opponent "would be going to trial" if FBI Director James Comey hadn't been "very good to her."

Speaking with FOX Business Network's Maria Bartiromo, Trump was asked if he had regretted not asking Comey to step down once he assumed the presidency -- and if it was too late even now to ask that of Comey, should he chose to do so.

Trump responded to the question in vague terms, saying, "No, it's not too late, but, you know, I have confidence in him. We'll see what happens. You know, it's going to be interesting."

Trump then pivoted to talking about how Comey, who was appointed director of the FBI in 2013 by former President Barack Obama, helped former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, noting that Comey "saved her life."

"Director Comey was very, very good to Hillary Clinton, that I can tell you," Trump told Bartiromo. "If he weren't, she would be, right now, going to trial."

Throughout his presidential campaign, Trump had promised to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton in regard to her leaked emails. During the FOX Business interview, though, he dismissed a question when asked if he was going to "push that."

"I don't want to talk about that," Trump said. "I want to talk about positive."
