Tim Kaine's son among several arrested after protesters disrupt Trump rally

Linwood Michael Kaine, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine's 24-year-old son, was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of second-degree riot in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Pioneer Press reported.

He was one of six people arrested during the "March 4 Trump" rally at the State Capitol that turned violent when counterprotesters set off fireworks, lit a smoke bomb and sprayed a chemical irritant into the crowd.

Linwood Kaine, who goes by the nickname Woody, was released Tuesday morning without being charged with any felonies.

The Pioneer Press reports police are still investigating the matter.

Four other people at the rally were arrested on suspicion of second-degree riot, and another was brought in for disorderly conduct. They, too, were released without charges.

Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton's running mate in the 2016 election, released a brief email statement to The Washington Post through a spokesperson:

"We love that our three children have their own views and concerns about current political issues. They fully understand the responsibility to express those concerns peacefully."

The former vice presidential candidate and his wife, Anne Holton, did not comment on the specifics of the arrest.

Police said Woody was among 50 counterprotesters who clashed with pro-Trump demonstrators, where a crowd of 400 had gathered to support the new president.

Steve Linders, a police spokesperson, told the Pioneer Press that Woody ran from the scene and was arrested down the street.

He resisted the arresting officer, who had to use force to take him into custody, Linders added.

Police told the Pioneer Press they had no idea they had arrested the son of a U.S. Senator.
