Canadian school district cancels field trips to US after Trump's travel ban

One Canadian school district recently announced it has cancelled future field trips to the U.S. following President Trump's proposed travel ban.

The Greater Essex County District School Board in Ontario voiced concerns as to whether their 35,000 students could safely cross the American border, fearing some students may be detained or turned away, reports the Windsor Star.

President Trump's travel ban doesn't directly affect Canadian citizens, however not all students will be traveling with a Canadian passport.

"Some students would be traveling as Canadian-dual nationals and some students might be traveling with passports from a foreign country," school board spokesman Scott Scantlebury told CNN. "So as a result, we are waiting to get clarity before continuing these trips to Detroit."

The cancellations include a trip to Detroit to see "The Lion King," a trip to the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and a trip to Washington D.C.

The school board spokesman added that they will re-evaluate the cancellations at the end of the month, hoping to have some "clarity" on the travel ban by that time.

The travel ban, which would temporarily bans visitors from seven majority-Muslim nations, has been halted by a federal court ruling. Three judges maintained a block on the travel ban on Friday.
