Meghan McCain: 'Meryl Streep speech is why Trump won'

On Sunday night, Meghan McCain, a Fox News personality and daughter of Senator John McCain, reacted very strongly to Meryl Streep's address at the Golden Globe Awards.

Meghan wrote on Twitter, "This Meryl Streep speech is why Trump won. And if people in Hollywood don't start recognizing why and how – you will help him get re-elected."

The comment confounded many, as Meghan has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump.

Also, it was unclear which part of Streep's message prompted the tweet.

CNN notes that "while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award, the actress [Streep] denounced Trump's campaign rhetoric and criticized him for mocking a disabled reporter."

She said, "There was one performance this year that stunned me...There was nothing good about it. But it was effective...It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter — someone he out-ranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back."

Meghan's tweet casting aspersions on Streep's words quickly grabbed the attention of actor Billy Eichner.

He first wrote, "Um she asked him not to make fun of disabled people and advocated for the freedom of the press and the arts you f*****g moron."

Meghan responded, "Calling republicans like me 'f*****g morons' is a great way for Hollywood to bridge the cultural divide. Enjoy your bubble."

Among Eichner's retorts to that comment was, "I have no desire to 'bridge the cultural divide' with ignorant voters who don't respect other cultures!"
