Suspect charged in Louisiana shooting death of ex-NFL player Joe McKnight

A man suspected of fatally shooting former National Football League player JoeMcKnight last week in a possible road rage case near New Orleans has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, local media reported on Tuesday.

Ronald Gasser, 54, has been jailed in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, where the sheriff's office was preparing a news conference, WGNO-TV and other media said.

Gasser was initially taken into custody after the shooting on Thursday in Terrytown and then released without charges while the sheriff's office said it was continuing its investigation.

McKnight, 28, was pronounced dead at a traffic intersection after suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, the sheriff's office said in a statement at the time.

McKnight was a running back for the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs from 2010 through 2014. After his last NFL season, he played in the Canadian Football League.
