ROSEVILLE (KTXL) -- The water polo team practiced on what looked like an ordinary afternoon at Woodcreek High School.

But on this day, the team was missing one of its own.

As they played, senior Ryan McHale was fighting for his life in the hospital.

"It's been rough, we're using each other as support," said friend Max Banks.

Banks and Tommy Kay are teammates and longtime friends.

"I've known him since I was like 6 years old, swam with him for years, he's just the funniest guy," said Kay.

Roseville police say 18-year-old Adam Johnson ran over 16-year-old McHale on Wednesday night.

Johnson was arrested on charges of being under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Police don't think the accident was intentional.

Banks said McHale and Adams are best friends who were playing around with a car in Adam Baquera Park.

"They were car surfing and Ryan just kind of fell off the car," said Banks.

The terrible accident left McHale in a coma in the ICU and his best friend behind bars on multiple charges.

The water polo team is raising money to support McHale's family by selling buttons with his number on them.

His dad, Scott, wrote a Facebook message to his son's friends and teammates saying:

"Knowing how much support we have makes us feel so much better during this traumatic and difficult time," said Scott McHale.

The water polo team has organized a fundraiser at Mod Pizza in Rocklin on Thursday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
