AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) -- An Aurora police officer stepped up to help a family who reached out with an unusual request.

"Last night we received a post on our Facebook page which pulled at our heartstrings," the police department said. "It was a request to help a little girl."

The girl, Abygale-Rose, was upset because her father "walked out of the family and moved away to a different state," her mother told police.

Her school, Dartmouth Elementary, was holding an event called "Donuts with Dad" on Friday morning, and Abygale-Rose was upset and didn't want to go to school.

Abygale-Rose's mom, Jewel-Leilani Smejkal, reached out to police to see if an officer could swing by the school to help brighten the girl's day.

"Well it didn't take long to find a volunteer," the police department said on Facebook. "Sergeant Mike Pitrusu of the District 1 PAR Unit took time out of this busy schedule and spent the morning with Abygale-Rose enjoying donuts and showing off his patrol his patrol car to the kids."

"I can't even come close to expressing my gratitude for the Aurora Police Department, and especially Officer Mike Pitrusu," Abygale-Rose's mom said. "He is a remarkable man with such a wonderful talent with kids, and just made my daughter's day. He made MY day! She will be talking about this day for weeks to come!"

"It looks like Sergeant Pitrusu has a new friend for life. Great job Sergeant!" the police department said.
