Carson: Trump prayed for forgiveness before the debate

Donald Trump said his prayers before the second presidential debate Sunday, according to Yahoo News.

Dr. Ben Carson, a Trump supporter since ending his own presidential campaign, told Yahoo News that Trump prayed with televangelist James Robison.

Robison is also the founder of LIFE Outreach International, a Christian relief organization.

The debate came on the heels of a serious controversy over a a 2005 video that was leaked to the press Friday in which Trump makes lewd comments about women.

Carson told Yahoo News that Trump's morning prayer with Robison included asking for forgiveness.

"He is coming ever closer to the Lord," Carson said of Trump.

Many evangelical Christians, who usually vote Republican, have been reluctant to vote for Trump. He does not have a religious background, and he has faced serious questions about his character.

Carson, a professed evangelical, introduced Trump to Robison.

In June, Robison explained why he decided to "counsel" Trump in a letter, since many people have questioned his decision.

He added that he does not endorse candidates -- he is simply giving Trump guidance.

"I encouraged him, while assuring him of our love for him and his family, and concern for America's future," Robison wrote.

"But I also spoke bluntly and forcefully about where I'm convinced he needs to make essential changes in his approach and rhetoric while gaining the wisdom that comes from above to become the effective leader necessary to correct our nation's dangerous course."

Carson told Yahoo News that Christian voters probably won't find Trump's conduct on the recording acceptable, but he said that Trump is still a better option than the Democratic nominee.

"I'm a Christian voter and I'm not OK with it, but I can look at the bigger picture, and I think a lot of other Christians can look at the bigger picture too," Carson told Yahoo News.

"I can't defend the video, but I can certainly continue to support him because I think what he represents is far superior to what Hillary represents."
