Most of our attention over the past week has been focused on Hurricane Matthew, which hit several island nations over the past few days on its way towards the southern United States.

Hundreds have been confirmed dead in Haiti after the hurricane hit, with the death toll still growing as they struggle to recover.

Elsewhere, we saw scenes from Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump's ongoing presidential campaigns, including the debate between their running mates, Tim Kaine and Mike Pence. In Italy, Pope Francis paid a visit to the area recently ravaged by a devastating earthquake, and in Spain, teams competed to create the largest 'human tower' possible.

Click through the slideshow above for photos from all of these stories and more, and be sure to check back next weekend for our selection of the best photos from the next seven days.
