Walmart employees under fire for refusing to decorate 'racist' cake

Three employees at a Georgia Walmart are receiving backlash for refusing to decorate a cake for a police officer's retirement party.

The daughter of the officer went to Walmart in McDonough, Georgia and asked the bakery to create a "thin blue line" cake. The employees, however, claimed that the request was racist and refused to honor it.

A family friend, Taylor Wilkes, took to Facebook to express his frustration:

According to Wilkes, three members of management refused to decorate it. "To me, this is appalling," he said.

The officer's daughter spoke to Fox News reporter Todd Starnes about the incident. "I was so shocked," she told Starnes. "I didn't know what to do or say or anything. I was trying not to lose my temper or make a scene."

She originally wanted the decoration to be the police officer's flag, with is a black-and-white American flag with a blue line. When that was rejected, she asked for merely a black background with a frosted blue line. That, too, was rejected.

The daughter was disappointed at Walmart's reaction. "I go to Walmart all the time — at least once a week spend hundreds of dollars," she told Starnes. "I just wanted to make my dad a cake to show how much I appreciated him."

After Walmart heard about the incident, the store manager contacted her to apologize. He offered to have the cake made free of charge and an additional $50 gift card.

Even then, the officer's daughter was not given the cake she wanted. Bakers still refused to decorate it, so the manager had to do it himself. "It looked terrible," she said. "It doesn't look professional."
