There's no headphone jack in the iPhone 7

After much speculation, Apple confirmed today at its fall 2016 event in San Francisco, that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will not have headphone jacks. Instead, Apple's EarPods will connect to the smartphones via their Lightning ports. One pair of the new earbuds will come with every iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Every iPhone 7 will come with a 3.5mm-to-lightning converter.

For those who prefer to keep their traditional headphones, don't panic. Apple will also include a dongle, which the company is calling a "Lightning to mini phono audio adapter," that comes with every iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus as well.

When explaining why Apple chose to get rid of the headphone jack, Apple VP Phil Schiller explained that it allowed Apple to free up space within the smartphone for other features, like the new W1 chip and taptic engine. He also said it took "courage" to get rid of an iconic industry standard, and reminded the audience that the Lightning port was always developed to include digital audio capability.

Apple also announced a brand-new, wireless version of EarPods at the event, called AirPods.
