6 things to know about Prince George's new school

When Kensington Palace announced Friday that 3-year-old Prince George would be attending Thomas's Battersea prep school beginning in September, it almost broke the internet. The palace says the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are "delighted to have found a school where they are confident George will have a happy and successful start to his education."

Here are six things to know about the tony coed establishment for ages 4-12 where the young royal will be spending his school days.

1) It's pricey.

What else would you expect? Thomas's Battersea charges more than 6,000 pounds a term (approximately $7,500 in U.S. dollars and nearly $23,000/year), according to the 2017 Tatler Schools Guide.

2) It's an unconventional choice.

While the prep school has a branch located just a few miles away from the royal residence at Kensington Palace, the family has chosen instead to send the young prince to the outpost in Battersea in southwest London, described by the Daily Mail as "a very middle class, aspirational area of London full of bankers, journalists and City types — not the traditional Eton-style feeder school royals have been sent to in the past."

3) It's family-run.

The school, which has four branches in the London area, was established by David and Joanna Thomas 40 years ago.

4) It has several famous alums.

Singer Florence Welch, model Cara Delevingne and actresses Celine Buckens, Charlotte Ritchie and Tara Fitzgerald all reportedly attended the school.

5) It's moderately sized.

The school has 540 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 13.

6) It's not the same prep school dad William and Uncle Harry attended.

They attended Wetherby School in Notting Hill.
