What would Meghan Markle's royal title be if she and Prince Harry wed?

Updated

At this point, all signs point to Prince Harry and "Suits" star Meghan Markle tying the knot at some point in the future. I mean, they did recently attend a friend's wedding together. What more evidence could we possibly need ... right? So, the inevitable glorious occasion begs the question: what will be Markle's title once she marries into the royal family?

According to People, she would definitely be called Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales -- but that may not be all. Because Prince William was given the Dukedom of Cambridge when he and Kate Middleton married in April 2011, the Queen is expected to give Harry another title, as well. As was the case with Middleton -- who became the Duchess of Cambridge -- Markle would take on the name of duchess should Harry be given a dukedom upon his nuptials.

While the Duchess of Sussex and Clarence are among the available titles, People says "the smart money is on Sussex." The title died with the 6th son of King George III in 1843.

Regarding the decision, royal historian Marlene Koenig says, "Most likely, he will be created a Duke. Sussex is available so [Meghan] would be HRH the Duchess of Sussex. Her rank would be a princess by marriage of the United Kingdom, Great Britain, and Northern Ireland."

Now, while many expect Prince Harry's trajectory to follow in the footsteps of older brother, William, the big day may unfold differently because the "Suits" actress is a Catholic divorcee. In fact, there's speculation that the Queen may not even attend (she only attended the reception of her son's second wedding).

All together now: Gasp.
