Why Joanna Gaines refuses to upgrade her engagement ring

This Fixer Upper star is sooo not interested in fixing up her engagement ring. In her opinion, her special sparkler is perfect just the way it is! HGTV's Joanna Gaines just revealed the super sweet way the engagement ring on her finger (from her Fixer Upper co-star and hubby, Chip Gaines) came to be — and why there's nothing in this world that could get her to change it. See all the photos here.

It's not unusual for couples to give their engagement rings a bit of a spruce to celebrate an anniversary or the fact that they're no longer young and broke. (Wedding planning is expensive, y'all...) But although Gaines has made her career overhauling real estate properties, you won't catch this design expert upgrading her engagement ring. "I was able to pick out a nice round diamond and a beautiful, antique-looking platinum setting," she says of her original sparkler in an from her new book, The Magnolia Book, as told to Cosmpolitan.com. After her future hubby Chip proposed, he whisked her away to a nearby jewelry store, where the jeweler was there waiting to help the couple customize a beautiful engagement ring for Joanna.

But since the ring was going to take some time to complete, the jeweler lent the bride-to-be a substitute sparkler to wear at her impromptu engagement party. "It was a great big, gaudy fake diamond that he'd put together so I would have something to show off to my friends and family," remembers Gaines. "Of course they were all taken aback by the size of my 'diamond.' It's funny to me that, even way back then, they all seemed to realize that a flashy ring just wasn't my style. They expected to see me wearing something a little subtler, a little smaller, a little more classic maybe." A.K.A exactly like the beautiful bauble Gaines ended up with! "We strung them along for a good long while, and we all had a good laugh when Chip finally revealed that the ring was fake," said Gaines, but 12 years later this lucky lady actually got the opportunity to sport a sparkler similar to her 'fake-out ring.'

On their anniversary over a decade later, Gaines found that exact same jeweler sitting on her porch with a black velvet tray of dazzling diamonds. "'Chip wants you to upgrade,' he said to me." Ummm, can we just interject here to state that this is our dream scenario?! But as it turns out, it wasn't Gaines'. "I looked him in the eye, and I said, 'I'm sorry, but no. This is the original diamond I picked, and it's perfect just the way it is.'" We can't even fault her for turning down a megawatt ring, because that sentiment is just too darn sweet!

"It wasn't a 'perfect' diamond," Gaines is sure to point out. "But it was perfect for me... To me, my ring is part of our story."
