A Philadelphia dog named Che is being called a hero after risking his own life to protect his owner from the ravages of a house fire, reports WPVI.

Neighbors say they were awoken by Che's barking at about 4:30 a.m. on Sunday.

When they noticed flames coming from the home, they rushed to help -- but they were unable to get the front door open, notes KYW.

Firefighters arrived only moments later, and found the dog and his owner, Andrea Bulat, unconscious on the living room floor.

Che was on her chest, serving as a shield from further harm.

Bulat, who sustained burns to over half of her body, was taken to an area hospital and is said to be in critical condition.

Che was being treated for smoke inhalation by the Red Paw Emergency Relief Team, and reports say he was released from the hospital Thursday.
