Andrew and I are heading to Europe in a few weeks to celebrate our second wedding anniversary, and this trip has been the only thing on my mind lately. As temperatures still hover in the high 80s down here in Delray, all I can think about is a break from the heat and my first foray into fall clothing for the season. I have a lot of things on my wish list for the trip, but I'm mostly in the market for a new pair of black ankle booties. Something about this wear-with-everything staple feels essential to me for my Eurotrip. I'll definitely be bringing my trusty old rag & bone Harrow booties (purchased years ago at the #NSale) for nights out, but I'm in search of a mildly embellished flat or low-heeled pair to dress up my skinnies and light sweaters or to toughen up my night-out dresses when I'm not feeling heels. And as an added bonus, ankle booties are perfectly appropriate for our mild Florida fall and winter once I return to the states. Here's a round-up of the styles I'm considering on my hunt for the perfect bootie.

Best splurge:

The Valentino 'Rockstud' collection isn't going anywhere any time soon. A lot of the pieces from this iconic collection are on my wishlist (hello, perfect pumps!), but I was absolutely smitten when I came across the ankle booties. The pebbled leather is durable, the side zipper allows them to easily slide on, the low stacked heel makes for comfortable sightseeing, and the studded wraparound strap adds just enough embellishment to make them interesting without being over the top. But at $1,295, these are definitely an investment piece.

Best steal:

If you're not looking to spend a fortune, I'm seriously loving the Steve Madden 'CHILY.' Featuring decorative leather and chain fringe in the back, this antiqued leather bootie is the perfect combination of edgy and boho. This pair also featured a stacked heel and side-zipper for easy wearing, and at $159, definitely don't break the bank.

Best booties for bad weather:

Don't get me wrong, I love my Hunter boots – but sometimes it would be nice to have an edgier and less bulky alternative for nasty weather. Enter the Rebecca Taylor 'Quincy' boot. This moto-inspired rubber boot looks nothing like a rain boot with its low ankle height, stacked heel, and stylish pyramid-embellished rubber straps. And another side zipper makes these rain boots easy to slide on and off, which isn't usually the case. I'd say these are even cute enough to wear in the sunshine.

Best embellished booties:

It's hard to pick just one pair of embellished booties for fall, so I'm providing a few options, depending on just how much sass you're looking for. For a tougher, more motorcycle-inspired pair, I love the Dolce Vita 'Joey' boot. If you're going for something a bit more unique, I'm seriously obsessed with the Sophia Webster 'Karina,' which features rose gold studs in the shape of butterfly wings. For buckled details, I'm liking Rebecca Minkoff's 'Maddox' style and Loeffler Randall's 'Fenton' booties.
