Crocs and Uggs: Fashion's 'ugly' shoes are making a comeback

Only Christopher Kane and Preen could make us re-think Crocs and Uggs.

Both brands sent down these unanimously reviled "ugly" shoes today—but with their own creative twists. At London fashion week, Christopher Kane presented his spring 2017 collection full of slinky dresses, T-shirts with colored grommets and religious iconography, and knitted tops with floral appliqués. But one bedazzled accessory stood out among these beauties and became the star of Instagram: the Crocs shoes.

Check them out on the runway:

The runway collaboration between Kane and the footwear brand included the classic sandals embossed with an array of crystals and stones in shades of navy blue, brown, and gray. Most people associate these rubbery shoes with nurses, cooks, gardeners, and the occasional style-challenged neighbor. They've undoubtedly been the butt of many style jokes, and the hatred for these comfy sandals rivals that of another fashion faux pas: Uggs, which London-based label Preen by Thornton Bregazzi also coincidentally collaborated with for its spring 2017 collection.

Preen sent models down the catwalk wearing black and white flatforms and sandals adorned with bows and styled with lace tights and socks. True to the Ugg brand, they looked surprisingly comfortable.

And while you may not be ready to jump on the bandwagon of the seemingly ugly footwear trend just yet, it doesn't come as too much of a surprise that Uggs and Crocs have popped up on the runway this season. The Birkenstock and Teva sandals enjoyed their 15 minutes of fashion fame in past seasons, with labels, including Marni, Prada, and Céline, creating their own renditions. Now it's time for the Crocs and Uggs to shine—and we're ready.

If you want to try the trend before the designer versions are released next year, you're in luck. The classic Crocs retail for just $35, while most pairs of Ugg sandals or boots will only cost you between about $100 to $200. Talk about an affordable, approachable trend.
