Milly designer dishes on her sensual, vibrant Spring/Summer 2017 collection

Updated

Milly made a splash with her Selena Off-the-Shoulder Ruffle Dress in Spring 2016 -- and if we had to pick, this flowy cobalt blue dress that debuted during the Spring/Summer 2017 show Friday will be flying off the shelves come next year.

The new collection is a sight for sore eyes -- and that seems to be exactly how Milly co-founder and designer, Michelle Smith, wants it.

"I'm in a very romantic mood," Smith told AOL amid the hustle and bustle backstage one hour before showtime at ArtBeam in NYC Friday. "I was really exploring the place between purity and sensuality."

"These are ... very troubling, unstable times we're living in," she continued. "So when I set out to design the collection, I was looking for very pure fabrics that I trust, that I have an emotional connection to, that make me feel comfy."

That didn't keep Smith from creating something "really vibrant," though. For every pure black or white piece that made it down the catwalk, there were pops of sky and cobalt blue, emerald green or orange (our personal favorite) following right behind.

Check out all of the looks below:

As for that touch of sensuality she was aiming for, Smith hit it out of the park with subtle slits and open (or laced) backs. And she had her fun with playful arm and back ties -- or "love knots," as she affectionately refers to them.

Watch the big finale to get another glimpse at the collection:

While the designer predicts those very elements will dominate the industry next spring and summer, there's one trend she doesn't foresee withstanding the test of time. "Probably off-the-shoulder will start to disappear -- or [be] done in new ways." There you have it -- fashionistas, take note.

And when asked if she designed the collection with anyone specific in mind, Smith's answer was refreshingly simple.

"Honestly, when I'm designing the collection, I'm thinking a lot about what I want to wear."

So, as it turns out, if you're looking for the quintessential "Milly girl," you don't have to look very far.
