NBC News reportedly erasing all traces of Matt Lauer: 'It is almost like they want to pretend he never existed'

Matt Lauer spent more than twenty years behind an NBC News desk, but as of late, you wouldn't know it by a visit to 30 Rock.

NBC News is taking all possible measures to scrub Lauer from its memory, according to Page Six, which reports that photos, name plates and his office are all being "destroyed."

"They are so sickened by his behavior it is almost like they want to pretend he never existed," Page Six's source said.

While plans were already in place to renovate many areas of the building, the company is expediting the process for Lauer's office: "Matt’s office is being completely demolished. Everything is going, including that button under his desk, his name plate, the photos of him in the hallways, the pictures of him online and on NBC News social media."

Fellow NBC personality Seth Meyers took aim at the now-infamous desk button, which allowed Lauer to lock his door without getting up, in a pointed segment after Lauer's departure from the network. "Let me address anyone who works in the button-installing business if I may,” Meyers said on "Late Night." “Nobody wants a button under their desk for a non-evil reason." (It has since been on Twitter that the button in question only locks the door from the outside, so while nobody could enter the locked room, it would still be possible to exit.)

The Page Six report also claims that Lauer has been sending "groveling apologies" via email to his ex-coworkers, many of whom have not responded.

Lauer celebrated his 20th year as a "Today" show anchor earlier in 2017. He was fired from the network last week amid news that multiple women, including a former intern, had accused him of sexual harassment, misconduct and assault.

He is reportedly seeking a $30 million payout from the network. A top NBC executive claims it's not going to happen.
