Sharon Stone gives classy response to Madonna calling her 'mediocre' in private letter from the '90s

Sharon Stone goes high.

The Total Recall actress rose above a recently uncovered letter that Madonna penned in the '90s, where she referred to Stone and the late Whitney Houston as "mediocre," giving the classiest possible response while criticizing the letter being made public at all.

"Dear @madonna, First, I think it's absurd that anyone is publishing your private letters. Therefore; I publish publicly," the 59-year-old Emmy winner wrote on her social media alongside a picture of the two of them together. "Know that I am your friend. I have wished to be a rock star in some private moments... have felt as mediocre as you described."

"We know, as only those who have survived so long that owning our own mediocrity is the only way to own our own strengths; to become all that we both have become," Stone continued. "I love and adore you; won't be pitted against you by any invasion of our personal journeys."

Addressed simply to "J" -- believed to be shorthand for Madonna's ex-boyfriend, John Enos -- Madonna in her past letter laments over the "heartache and pain" being an artist has brought her, while expressing frustration over Houston and Stone's success.

"It's so unequivically [sic] frustrating to read that Whitney Houston has the music career I wish I had and Sharon Stone has the film career I'll never have," she confessed at the time. "Not because I want to be these women because I'd rather die, but they're so horribly mediocre, and they're always being held up as paragons of virtue and some sort of measuring stick to humiliate me."

The private letter is going up for auction on July 19 from the Gotta Have Rock and Roll auctioneers, who are starting the bidding at $1,000.

Madonna, who has been in Malawi with her family this week opening a children's hospital, has yet to publicly address the letter controversy.
