Lorde apologizes for 'autoimmune disease' Taylor Swift friendship analogy

Do enough press for your new album and chances are that you'll say something at some point that will rub someone the wrong way. Case in point: in an interview with The Guardian over the weekend, Lorde compared her friendship with Taylor Swift to having a "friend with specific allergies. There are certain places you can't go together... it's like having a friend with autoimmune disease."

That comment drew a harsh response from one Twitter user, who on Monday (June 19) called Lorde out for using a medical term to describe her musical pal. Stephanie Marie, editor of the Australian site SBS Sexuality, wrote, "I wonder how @selenagomez feels about this. What an incredibly ignorant analogy to make @lorde."

Gomez, also friends with Swift, suffers from the chronic autoimmune disorder Lupus. Lorde, who answered the question about Swift but never actually said her name in her answer, was clearly mortified by how the analogy was misinterpreted and offered a sincere apology for any offense.

"@stefinitely85 didn't mention taylor, but regardless, i fucked up & that was really insensitive. i'm sorry."
