'Modern Family' star Sarah Hyland responds to claims she's 'promoting anorexia' with her thin appearance

"Modern Family" scene-stealer Sarah Hyland took to Twitter on Wednesday to share a lengthy statement addressing growing rumors that she's battling an eating disorder.

"I'd like to address something," she started. "That something is my weight. I normally don't comment on things like this, because it draws attention to those trying to spread negativity, but I'm here to explain a few things and spread love. Here goes..."

"I haven't had the greatest year. Maybe one day I'll talk about it, but for now, I'd like my privacy. I will say that this year has brought a lot of changes and with that, physical changes. I have been told that I can't work out. Which, for me, is very upsetting," Hyland continued. "I am not a fan of 'being skinny.' Which many of you have told me that I am too much of. 'Eat a burger,' 'Your head is bigger than your body and that's disgusting,' and you're right! I should eat a burger! Cause they're f--king delicious! But guess what. I do."

Hyland has turned heads during her recent public appearances for her very thin frame, which caused fans -- and detractors -- to reach out to her on social media accusing her of things that weren't true and were clearly out of her control. She went on to explain that she knows she doesn't look as healthy as she should, and she confessed that she wants to get back to a place where she feels and looks stronger.

"And again, you're right. No one's head should be bigger than their body, but considering I've basically been on bed rest for the past few months, I've lost a lot of muscle mass," Hyland continued to explain. "My circumstances have put me in a place where I'm not in control of what my body looks like. So, I strive to be as healthy as possible, as everyone should. [...] I write this because I've been accused of promoting anorexia in, ironically enough, an anti-bullying post. And I want young girls to know that that's NOT my intention."

As a role model for young women around the world, Hyland also made sure to explain that her current weight shouldn't be a desirable one. She considers herself to be "an activist for activity" and wants her fans to know the importance of being strong -- both mentally and physically.

"I'm here to say that no one should aim to be the weight I am at right now," she proclaimed. "I am working hard to maintain my weight by eating as much protein as possible and continue to be STRONG and healthy. There's no need to worry! I've been down before, and I'll probably be down again in my lifetime, but I'm steadfast and solid and will conquer my obstacles."

The "Modern Family" beauty said that she's taking "medication that is saving my life," which has had physical side effects that have affected her appearance, though she notes that the increased discussion about her current appearance isn't any different from feedback she has experience before. No matter what weight she is or how skinny she looks, Hyland noted that the public will always have something negative to say.

"I will always be too fat. I will always be too skinny. I will never have enough curves to be called a woman. And I will always be a slut for wearing a push up bra," she finished. "Love the you you set out to be. [...] Love and positivity is what we need most. Especially at a time like this. The world may be falling apart, but it's up to us to pull it back together."
