Ryan Gosling explains why he laughed during Oscars mishap: 'I was so relieved' it wasn't something worse

The world watched in horror as La La Land was declared Best Picture at last month's Oscars, only for Moonlight to be announced as the real winner minutes later -- but not Ryan Gosling.

While his cast and crew couldn't hide their shock, the 28-year-old actor couldn't help but giggle through the mix-up -- and didn't offer an explanation for the unusual reaction until Wednesday.

"What really was happening as I was watching, it was surreal anyway, I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt," Gosling shared while speaking at the Adobe Summit in Las Vegas. "I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst case scenario playing out in my head."

"And then I just heard, 'Oh Moonlight won,' and I was so relieved that I started laughing," he continued. "But truthfully, I was also so thrilled that Moonlight won, I know the director...I've worked with them before. It's such a ground breaking film, made for a million dollars, and incredible achievement and I'm so happy for them that they were being recognized."

The blunder unfortunately left Gosling without an award that night, but his co-star, Emma Stone, couldn't have been more gracious about the gaffe backstage.

"Whew, you guys see that?" she cracked.

"I f**king love Moonlight. God, I love Moonlight so much. I am so excited for Moonlight," the 28-year-old said. "And of course, it was an amazing thing to hear La La Land. I think we all would have loved to win Best Picture, but we are so excited for Moonlight. I think it is one of the best films of all time, so I was pretty beside myself."
