James Corden defends Jimmy Fallon over soft Trump interview: Criticism was 'really unfair'

"The Late Late Show" host James Corden defended his NBC network partner Jimmy Fallon over Fallon's interview with President Donald Trump last year that many criticized as being too soft.

Corden spoke at PaleyFest TV and, according to the BBC, thought the attacks on Fallon were "really unfair."

"I don't think anyone asked [President Trump] the right questions," he said. "I don't think anyone took him to task or asked the questions that were needed."

The interview he's referring to occurred in September, when Fallon had the then presidential candidate on "The Tonight Show." In a now infamous interview, the host asked Trump if he could ruffle his hair.

Fallon faced a lot of backlash for playing with Trump's hair, with many commenting on how Fallon shouldn't have let Trump off the hook for his racist and sexist comments while on the campaign trail. Comedian Billy Eichner, for example, slammed Fallon, saying it wasn't "a good moment."

Fallon defended the interview, saying "Have you seen my show? I'm never too hard on anyone. We'll have Hillary [Clinton] on tomorrow, and we'll do something fun with her too."

"Moving forward, with how potentially dangerous these guys can be, you can't be fluffing a Nazi sympathizer's hair on television," Eichner said.

Corden has been political on his show since the election last November, so he described what he would do if Trump ever guested on his show.

He said he would play a game with him called "Stand By It or Take It Back," where the host would read things Trump said on the campaign trail and the President would decide whether to stand by it or take it back.

"If you take it back, it's taken back forever. If you stand by it, you've got to tell me why. I felt like that was such a good game," he said.
