Gigi Hadid opens up about her thyroid disorder

Updated

Gigi Hadid is no stranger to body shaming and defending what she's got. However, in between comments on her weight from designers and otherwise, the model has been dealing with a health issue over the past couple years. In a recent interview, Hadid opened up about her thyroid disorder and its symptoms. "My metabolism actually changed like crazy this year," she told elle.com. "I have Hashimoto's disease. It's a thyroid disease, and it's now been two years since taking the medication for it." Other celebrities like Zoë Saldana and Gina Rodriguez have also revealed they have it, too.

If you're unfamiliar with the disease, which is also called chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, it's a condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid. This can lead to an under-active thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), which left untreated, can cause health problems ranging from joint pain to heart disease. There are usually no signs of Hashimoto's disease until it develops into hypothyroidism, which includes symptoms like facial puffiness, dry skin, fatigue and muscle weakness, according to Mayo Clinic.

Despite dealing with a thyroid disorder, Hadid has never taken a day off work if she's feeling sick. "You know, I've never taken a sick day," she said in the interview. "I just realized! I feel that pressure of not taking time for yourself because you don't want it to affect your professionalism." Between the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and countless other events she has to attend on a daily, we're not sure how that girl finds time to relax and de-stress. She said screaming in a pillow helps. Same.
